Grazie alle più recenti acquisizioni in diversi campi di ricerca, il film illustra ad un pubblico non specialistico i fenomeni geologici e vulcanici inerenti l’eruzione del Vesuvio che nel 79 d.C. distrusse Ercolano, uccidendo molti dei suoi abitanti. Eventi che, fino ad oggi, erano rimasti per lo più sconosciuti. Il film racconta anche dei risultati molto interessanti ottenuti nel campo della paleopatologia, ovvero della ricerca sulle malattie antiche, studiando i numerosi scheletri recentemente disseppelliti nell’antica marina di Ercolano.

Thanks to the most recent acquirements in various scientific fields, this film illustrates, in a very simplified manner and for a non specialistic public, the geological and volcanic phenomena involved in the eruption of the Vesuvius, which in 79 A.D. Destroyed and buried Herculaneum, killing many of its inhabitants; until now these events have been almost unknown.The film also reports on the very interesting results obtained in the field of paleopathology (research about ancient diseases), by studying the numerous skeletons, recently unearthed on the old Roman seashore of Herculaneum.
